Embedded insurance has emerged as an opportunistic and even game-changing innovation for the insurance industry. With forecasts projecting sales of embedded property/casualty insurance to reach $70 billion in the U.S. and $700 billion globally by 2030, the potential is clear. Yet, despite initial excitement, the embedded insurance revolution hasn’t fully lived up to expectations.
Many have wondered why.
My personal hypothesis: The current state of embedded insurance hasn’t matched the initial excitement from a few years ago due to hidden complexities that are only now coming to light.
Embedded Insurance 1.0: How We Got Here
The adoption of embedded insurance has been slower than anticipated. Embedded Insurance 1.0 faced several challenges that hindered its growth and effectiveness. To start, it was plagued by friction and manual processes that reduced usability and scalability. The integration of insurance offerings into non-insurance platforms often felt clunky and disjointed, failing to provide the seamless experience consumers expected.
Embedded Insurance 1.0 relied on substandard entry points for end consumers to purchase insurance, leading to lower conversion rates. In other words, the insurance buying process was often tacked onto the end of another transaction, feeling more like an afterthought for the end user than an integral part of the customer journey.
Simply put, the one-size-fits-all solutions offered by Embedded Insurance 1.0 didn’t always make sense for consumers, resulting in conversion rates that didn’t align with expectations. We’ve all been a part of a buying process where the insurance solution offered at the end of the purchase felt outdated and not fully relevant to the brand. The lack of personalization and contextualization meant that many consumers simply didn’t see the value in the offerings.
Embedded Insurance 2.0: Solving 1.0 Problems with Better Infrastructure
As we move into the next phase of embedded insurance, I fully believe we’ve entered the 2.0 era. Yet, two key complexities still need to be addressed, and while I’ve listed them briefly here, they are in no-way simple:
- Technological Infrastructure Challenges. There’s a significant gap between existing systems and the capabilities required for truly seamless embedded insurance. Many insurers lack the necessary technological infrastructure to integrate their offerings into third-party platforms effectively. In fact, many InsurTech companies have also struggled to deliver the technology necessary. No wonder there is difficulty facilitating seamless integration with non-insurance brands. This requires sophisticated data exchange capabilities and a robust data infrastructure. Building these systems is no small feat, especially with legacy systems.
- Advanced Data Utilization and Personalization. The demand for real-time data processing in embedded insurance is no longer a nice-to-have, but a necessity. InsurTech partners need to be able to analyze and act on data instantly to provide personalized quotes and coverage options at the point of sale. Creating a frictionless quoting experience presents another challenge as it requires eliminating manual data entry, reducing errors, and leveraging existing customer data to streamline the process.
B2B brands possess a wealth of customer data, which can be leveraged thoughtfully to streamline the insurance process. A trusted platform for data sharing is paramount, allowing pre-population of existing customer data to ensure accuracy and convenience for the end consumer. This approach not only makes the consumer’s life easier in the purchasing process, but it also significantly reduces quoting process time. Embedded Insurance 2.0 provides insurers with richer, more accurate data for underwriting and pricing, ultimately leading to more tailored and competitive offerings.
There is a significant spectrum of technological readiness among today’s insurers. While some are at the forefront of innovation and have jumped head-first into these technology infrastructure and cultural improvements, others are still in the early stages of digital transformation. While this is bound to happen during any technological revolution, unfortunately, this disparity creates a fragmented market where some embedded insurance offerings are significantly more advanced than others.
Embedded 2.0 Look Ahead: Solving Problems
Embedded 2.0 is a refreshed approach to collaborating and innovating with third-party brands, of all types and sizes. Looking to the future of Embedded Insurance 2.0, several key factors will drive success:
- Developing insurance products tailored to the intrinsic risks present in the B2B brand’s ecosystem is crucial. By aligning coverage with the specific needs of the brand’s audience, insurers can leverage the power of contextual relevance, leading to higher conversion rates and deeper market penetration.
- Tailoring products and optimizing pricing based on additional data and insights will be a game-changer. The rich data available through brand partnerships will enable insurers to offer hyper-personalized coverage options.
- Enhanced end-consumer experience will translate to higher conversion rates and larger premium volumes. By creating a seamless, intuitive insurance buying process, embedded insurance can become a natural part of the customer journey.
Ultimately, the key to unlocking embedded insurance’s full potential is a precision-timed trifecta: offering the ideal product to the perfect audience through the most effective channel. If insurers can achieve this while spending less time, energy, and money on finding distribution channels, they’ll unlock unprecedented efficiency and growth.
While the embedded insurance revolution may be taking longer than expected, its long-term potential is still massive. By addressing the technological infrastructure challenges and mastering advanced data utilization and personalization, insurers can overcome the hurdles that have slowed progress.
The future of embedded insurance lies in creating seamless, personalized experiences that add genuine value to consumers’ lives. As insurers and their technology partners continue to innovate and refine their approaches, we can expect to see a new wave of embedded insurance solutions that truly live up to the initial excitement and potential of this transformative concept.
In fact, the revolution isn’t over—it’s just getting started.
