MassMutual has named Nabil Hachem Head of Data Engineering. Hachem, who has nearly four decades of data management, architecture and engineering experience. MassMutual says the appointment will bolster its data analytics capabilities to further its business objectives, as well as provide a better customer experience for its five million policyholders.

MassMutual’s Data Engineering organization provides enterprise-level support with a focus on cutting-edge software and data management solutions. Its mission is to both advance and transform MassMutual’s businesses by empowering business units and data scientists with groundbreaking integrated data and information systems that enable and facilitate data analytics and machine learning.
Hachem will oversee a team of 25 professionals and is tasked with developing and implementing a comprehensive data engineering strategy to enhance consumer-focused data science initiatives across all MassMutual business lines, including the designing, building and operations of data integration pipelines, as well as overseeing the communication and collaboration between software development and data scientists.
He is also charged with providing strategic leadership and support to MassMutual’s data science, digital marketing, mobile and digital development teams which the insurer says are continuously engaged toward the goal of helping MassMutual interact with consumers on their terms.

“Over the past four years, MassMutual has developed one of the industry’s leading data science capabilities and, as such, continues to generate and interpret massive amounts of data that will enable us to better reach new and existing consumers,” comments Sears Merritt, MassMutual Vice President and Chief Data Scientist, to whom Hachem reports. “We’re looking to Nabil’s depth and breadth of data engineering expertise to help create and put in place an industry-leading enterprise data environment that will enable our entire data science team to build on that success.”

Hachem joins MassMutual after a nine-year tenure at Novartis Institute for BioMedical Research, Inc.; the past four-plus years as Director and Global Head of Data Engineering. He has also held senior data engineering and architecture posts at Vertica Systems, Inc. (now an HP company); Infinity Pharmaceuticals; Fidelity Investments Corp.; Direct Hit Technologies/Ask Jeeves Inc., and Encore Computer Corp. Hachem began his career in 1979 in Lebanon as an engineer and project manager for a data telecommunications firm.
In addition to his career in the corporate sector, from 1988 to 2002, he was a professor in the computer science department at Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute, eight years of which as a tenured associate professor. Hachem, who has co-authored dozens of papers and papers on data and big data, received a degree in electrical engineering from the American University of Beirut and earned his Ph.D. in computer engineering from Syracuse University.
