Costonis has led major initiatives to launch digital programs utilizing Service Design techniques, incorporating modern API architecture, largely deployed in the cloud. He also has pioneered a patented analytical method for optimizing claim outcomes, which became the basis for several large claims transformations.
“We are thrilled to have Michael take on his new role. His deep industry knowledge and proven capabilities will strengthen our market facing strategies and expand the business and growth opportunities for CNA,” comments Dino E. Robusto, Chairman & CEO, CNA. “A key to success will be Michael’s focus on helping business leaders innovate and drive transformative initiatives to enhance the ease of doing business with our agents and brokers.”
As a result of Costonis’ transition, CNA has added Gary Haase to its executive team. Haase will join CNA as Chief Operations Officer from Catalina Holdings (Bermuda) at the start of the 4th quarter of 2021. Haase occupied various leadership roles during two decades at Catalina Holdings, gaining expertise in operational management and strategy, actuarial science, complex reinsurance commutations, and practical application of big data and analytical technology solutions for the insurance industry. He is currently Catalina’s Group Chief Operating Officer.
“We welcome Gary to CNA and are certain his industry experience and expertise in sophisticated technology solutions and data analytics, will progress our operational strategy and decision making by institutionalizing analytical technologies and big data applications across our value chain,” comments Robusto.
Haase is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) and occasionally teaches graduate level courses in Statistics and Data Analysis at the New York University Stern School of Business. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Iowa and a MBA in Quantitative Finance from NYU Stern.
CNA Seeks New CFO
CNA also announced that it has begun a search for a new CFO as the result of the resignation of All Miralles, Executive VP and CFO. Miralles notified CNA that he will be leaving the insurance industry and transitioning to a career in the technology sector.
Pending Miralles’ replacement Larry Haefner, the company’s former Chief Actuary, will serve as interim CFO. During a 13 year career at CNA, Haefner was closely aligned with the company Finance team. His cross-functional understanding of CNA paired with his proven expertise in the property/casualty insurance business will ensure a smooth transition for the company, according to a CNA statement.
