Chubb Makes Major Appointments for North American, Overseas General Insurance

For North America, John Lupica named Executive Chairman, Juan Luis Ortega named president and Scott Meyer named COO. Paul McNamee named EVP Overseas General Insurance.

Chubb Group (Zurich) has announced several executive appointments to its North American general insurance business and its Overseas general insurance.

John Lupica, Vice Chairman, Chubb Group and President, North America Insurance, has been named Executive Chairman. Juan Luis Ortega, currently Executive Vice President, Chubb Group and President, Overseas General Insurance, has been named President, North America Insurance, succeeding Lupica. Scott Meyer, Senior Vice President, Chubb Group and Division President of Westchester, the company’s wholesale excess and surplus lines insurance business, has been named Chief Operating Officer, North America Insurance, a newly created position, reporting to Ortega. Paul McNamee has been named Executive Vice President, Chubb Group and President, Overseas General Insurance. All of the appointments are effective immediately, according to a Chubb statement.

As executive chairman, Lupica will have executive oversight, including strategy, governance and attention to major issues, of Chubb’s general insurance business in North America, according to the Chubb statement. In his role as President, Ortega will have day-to-day executive operating responsibility for North America Insurance both top and bottom line. He will report to Lupica.

Christopher Maleno, SVP, Chubb Group has been appointed Vice Chairman, North America Insurance. He will retain his current responsibilities as Division President, North America Field Operations, and report to Ortega.

Juan Luis Ortega has more than 25 years of insurance industry experience. He was appointed EVP, Chubb Group and President, Overseas General Insurance in 2019. Previously, Ortega served as Regional President of Latin America from 2016-2019 and Regional President of Asia Pacific from 2013 -2016. Ortega joined Chubb (ACE) in 1999 and advanced through a series of A&H and credit insurance management positions in Miami, Puerto Rico and Mexico, before being named Country President of Chile in 2005, where he was responsible for the company’s P&C, A&H and life insurance businesses in that country. He has served as SVP and Regional Head of A&H for both the company’s Asia Pacific and Latin America regions. Ortega earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Business Administration from Universidad Diego Portales, Chile.

Scott Meyer has nearly 35 years of insurance industry experience. He was appointed SVP, Chubb Group and Division President of Westchester, the company’s wholesale and excess and surplus lines insurance business, in 2020. Meyer joined Chubb’s North America Insurance business in 2008 as Executive Vice President, Professional Risk, and was promoted to Division President of Professional Risk in 2012. He was subsequently named Division President of North America Financial Lines in 2016. Meyer holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from New York University.

Christopher Maleno has over 35 years of insurance industry experience. He was named SVP, Chubb Group and Division President, Field Operations, North America Insurance in 2018. Previously, he served as Division President, North America National Accounts, from 2016-2018, and Division President of the company’s U.S.-based retail commercial P&C business, from 2013-2016. Maleno joined the company in 2007 as Division President, Regional Operations, and served as Chief Operating Officer and President, Casualty Risk.  Maleno began his insurance career with the Chubb Corporation in 1988 and served in a number of middle market commercial lines and branch roles. Maleno earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Vermont.

Chubb also announced that it has appointed Paul McNamee Executive Vice President, Chubb Group and President, Overseas General Insurance, based out of New York. McNamee will have executive operating responsibility for Chubb’s general insurance business in 51 countries outside of North America.

McNamee, who is currently SVP, Chubb Group and Regional President of Asia Pacific, will report to Chairman and CEO Greenberg and John Keogh, President and COO. McNamee succeeds Juan Luis Ortega, as a result of his appointment as President of the company’s North America Insurance operations.

Marcos Gunn, Senior Vice President, Chubb Group and Regional President of Latin America will succeed McNamee as head of the company’s Asia Pacific region. He will relocate from Miami to Singapore. Federico Spagnoli, Division President, Consumer Lines, Overseas General Insurance, will retain his current responsibilities and assume the leadership of the company’s Latin America region succeeding Gunn. Both Gunn and Spagnoli will report to McNamee.

Paul McNamee has nearly 30 years of insurance industry experience. He was appointed Senior Vice President, Chubb Group and Regional President, Asia Pacific in 2016. He served as Deputy Regional President and EVP, Commercial Property & Casualty, Asia Pacific from 2013-2016. Previously, McNamee was President of the company’s North America Property & Specialty Lines from 2009-2013. He joined Chubb (ACE) in 1995 in Australia and was named Head of Property and Technical Lines for Asia Pacific in 2002. McNamee served as COO for the company’s business in Hong Kong before being posted to London in 2005 as Executive Vice President and head of the company’s International Property & Technical Lines business. McNamee entered the industry in 1995, joining Cigna Corporation’s International operations in Australia, which were subsequently acquired by ACE.

Marcos Gunn has more than 25 years of insurance industry experience. He was appointed SVP, Chubb Group and Regional President, Latin America in 2019. Previously, he served as President, Northern Latin America Region, and COO for the company’s Latin America operations. Gunn joined Chubb in 2000 and has served in a variety of management roles, including Country President of Chile; Regional Vice President of A&H, Latin America; and Regional Vice President of A&H, Asia Pacific. Earlier in his career, he served as a commercial insurance underwriter at Chubb in Argentina, as well as underwriting and management positions at other insurance companies. Gunn holds a degree in Business Administration from the Catholic University of Buenos Aires.

Federico Spagnoli has more than 20 years of insurance industry experience. He joined Chubb in January 2024 as Division President, Consumer Lines, Overseas General Insurance. Previously, Spagnoli was CEO of Fully Ecosystem, a wellness fintech venture of Prudential Financial (Newark, N.J.), and before that was Regional President, Latin America for Prudential Financial. Over nearly 13 years at AIG, Spagnoli served as Regional Consumer CEO for EMEA and India, Regional Consumer Lines Head for Latin America, and Personal Lines Regional VP for Latin America, and he held A&H and personal lines leadership roles in Japan and South Korea. Spagnoli holds a degree in Law from Universidad del Salvador, an MBA degree in Management and Finance from Washington University in St. Louis, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategy and Innovation from the University of Oxford. He also holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting (CPCU) designation.
