Editor’s Note: Javier Muñiz, CIO, Integrand, is one of 16 finalists for Insurance Innovation Reporter’s Four Stars Award, which recognizes outstanding insurance IT innovators across four regions of Latin America: Mexico, Central America & Caribbean, Andean, and Southern Cone.

In its mission statement, Integrand Assurance Company (San Juan, Puerto Rico) aims to serve the entire people of Puerto Rico with its property insurance products and through its business acumen and “the warmth that characterizes our people.” In its vision statement, the company notes its recognition in the market not only for financial solidity and integrity, but to be in the vanguard of advanced technology, which through strategic alliances guarantees diversity of quality products and excellent customer service. CIO Javier Muñiz is charged with realizing that vision.

Muñiz pursues that objective with an eye to both the business opportunities that technology enables and consistent dedication to finding new efficiencies and service levels made possible by automation.

During his tenure he has overseen the modernization of Integrand’s systems, replacing a nearly 40-year-old system written in Cobol. Muñiz and his team wrote the replacement system and within a year, working with a small IT team, successfully migrated over 4,000 online and batch programs from a legacy hierarchical database to a modern, configurable Oracle relational database that supports ISO rating.

Muñiz recently supervised the successful implementation of an electronic document management system, which is now live for compulsory auto insurance and is in the process of being extended to other lines of business.

Muñiz’s team developed IntegPro, a tool designed to support marketing pools at diverse general agencies. Through the solution, agency representatives can connect remotely while visiting clients and enter information necessary to quote. While the agent is visiting the prospect, Integrand is able to provide the quote. The system provides options such as digital signature, online information request to Integrand, and delivery of an electronic copy.

Integrand was the first property/casualty insurer to launch a web page. Today, the company’s producers and agencies can obtain policy and claims information through Integrand’s site and can also manage their porfolios through the insurer’s IntegOptions portal. Through the portal they can download reports, access current and historical commission statements, and have the option of receiving their commission weekly through direct deposit.

Under Muñiz’s leadership, Integrand has developed three mobile applications enabling policyholders to access policy information as well as claim status and history.
